Part I: Christmas Factory
In the Christmas books of my childhood, Santa’s workshop was a white winter wonderland. I imagined it as a world that was soaked with a sparkling crystalline magic. Ronghui Chen’s photographic project brings us into an actual Christmas Factory. As it turns out, this one is located in China, rather than the North Pole. Here, the white sparkle of snow is replaced with an omnipresent red dust. This red powder is simultaneously graceful, garish and seemingly radioactive. It permeates absolutely everything- the air, the worker’s clothing, the floors and the walls.
