Thiemo Kloss | Rise

Rise
I’ve always wanted to see a photography project artfully documenting the guts of the internet. I want someone to finagle the necessary clearance to work inside one of the massive physical hubs — to show us where we all live, (like that time Bjork took apart her tv and showed us that a television is actually a tiny city.) Thiemo Kloss has taken me there, albeit, expressively.
In his series, Rise, Kloss uses projections on a stack of analog materials to build up hypnotic tentacles of light. They reach up towards the surface to form a dark Metropolis. They look like cities packed with information high rises, or clouds hovering above black impenetrable parks; they are landscapes with no nature. With the rise of all things digital, a society powered by computations becomes a dense glowing place, crowded with information, and sometimes inexplicably digitally lovely.
