Amanda Tinker | Part I: Small Animal
March 22, 2021
Amanda Tinker’s project Small Animal feels like a chance to peek into another world. Here, I imagine that Frances Hodgson Burnett’s secret garden has transformed into an entire enchanted universe. In these quiet images, Tinker arranges birds, butterflies and plant clippings on the ground glass of her 8×10 camera. These little treasures interact with ethereal, silhouetted figures that appear in the frame.
I imagine this as a world with no sound. It is made up of soft shadows and grey, dappled light. Little creatures gently pad through it. Time stands still as leaves, grass and bits of dirt congregate on the surface of the smoky glass.
