Echolilia
In his project ‘Echolilia’, Timothy Archibald and his son work collaboratively to understand each other in drawings and photographs through the filter of the Autistic spectrum.
This is one of those projects that has hovered in the back of my mind since I first saw it. Archibald’s compositions are simple, elegant and idiosyncratic. The project could be seen as an exploration of the senses- how his son sees, smells, tastes and hears the world around him. Each image feels like a little piece of morse code- a small clue given to enter into his son’s inner world. Archibald has a subtle and steady focus on surface textures; a face pressed up against a screen or the pull of a twisted rubber band on the skin. It made me feel that the images themselves almost communicate a sense of touch.
