Nancy Baron | Palm Springs: Modern Dogs at Home
April 27, 2023
Nancy Baron’s regal (and sometimes frumpy) canines pose without any humans present, and I begin to think of them as the principal inhabitants of the household. I imagine that they are allowing us to peek into their homes so that we might admire their good taste in art, or their ability to perfectly match the shade of orange in the living room carpet to their fur.
Confession: Lisa and I have a game that we play when we travel for photo events. We have an imaginary country inhabited only by dogs. Whenever we walk past a pup in the street, we try to identify who they are in Poochropolis, i.e. this one is the gov’ner; this one dreamed of playing rugby professionally, but didn’t quite have what it takes; this one stays home and eats only fruit.
I believe that Nancy Baron’s portraits of dogs in their homes might be some of the citizens of this pooch society. Baron’s images are delightful and playful, but they are also just excellent photographs, with her keen eye for color and the ability to find the wonderfully strange moment.
