Ira Wagner | Twin Houses
December 16, 2019
Ira Wagner’s project “Twin Houses” is brilliant in its simplicity. This work consists of frontal images of duplex homes in Northeastern United States. I often find that humor is a tricky thing to execute well in a photographic project, but Wagner gets it just right. By photographing these homes in a straightforward documentary fashion, he allows the small but key details of these twin homes to shine in a delightfully cheeky manner.
When I look at these images I begin to personify the homes. I see them as rebellious young teens trying to assert their individuality through any possible means. Every detail of these duplexes, no matter how subtle, feels like a declaration of independence from their conjoined twin. We start to notice grass mowed perfectly along property lines and rounded hedges on one side versus triangular on the other.
